Ice-skating on the largest natural ice surface in Europe is a truly unique experience, which is why ice-skating has become the most popular winter sport at Weissensee lake. With klappshaats (a type of cross-country ski boot that is buckled onto long skids) it is possible to cover the long distances and large surfaces on the lake in comfort and with a high level of mobility. Ice-skating courses for beginners and advanced skaters are also offered, and ice-skating races over 10-50km are held once a week. The winter season culminates in the “alternative elvstedentocht“, a large-scale ice-skating event that takes place over two weeks and includes several marathons over 50 – 200km, attracting more than 5000 enthusiastic skaters.
